After I posted a an article yesterday on How to Stop Pre-Marital Sex, Abyssal took the time to make a thoughtful reply.
Because it was long I thought I would shred him in a new post.
Here is his comment (the stuff in quotation marks are from me):
“There are consequences to our sin. Forgiveness doesn’t necessitate lack of consequence. If I rob a bank, God can forgive me, but I still go to jail.”
Agreed.
“Too many western Christians equate forgiveness with lack of consequence when Jesus taught just the opposite.”
Can I get a scriptural reference on that?
“If I murder your spouse should I get a pass if I repent?”
No, but then again a fornicator hasn’t hurt anybody and doesn’t represent a potential threat to the safety and well being of others…
“In addition, if someone lies that’s on them, not the pastor. He asked.”
It’s not just the liars who’re getting punished, but the honest, good-hearted people who want to leave their sins behind and lead a more godly life won’t be able to get married because they weren’t willing to lie are also getting punished, although in an earthly sense.
“You have no clue about what the Bible says about judgment.”
Seems like a pretty harsh evaluation of someone you don’t know.
“Why not investigate it for yourself. This is EXACTLY what we are commanded to do.”
Once more I’ll politely ask for a scripture reference on that one.
“Just because you want to overlook sin doesn’t make it a good idea.”
Since when did I want to overlook sin? I just said tha I think your system for punishing sin had holes in it.
Thanks for playing along Abyssal.
Can I get a scriptural reference on that?
How many ya want, sweetie?
Matthew 25 has three different parables all talking about consequences for the things we do in life. Some will argue these only apply to non-Christians, yet it speaks nothing about faith only about deeds.
The parable of the talents is particularly pointed as two of the three who received talents found favor and at the (allegorical) judgment were rewarded differently based on the actions they had taken in life.
II Corinthians 5:10:
“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.”
I can give you more if you would like, but you see my point. I see your point, too. Right there on your head.
“If I murder your spouse should I get a pass if I repent?”
No, but then again a fornicator hasn’t hurt anybody and doesn’t represent a potential threat to the safety and well being of others…
OK, but you didn’t address the point which was: Why should they not have consequence to their sin?
Here’s what we pastors have done by lowering the standards for marriage: We have destroyed the meaning of fidelity. We call people recycled virgins cause that’s what they want to hear. But it isn’t true.
There is a movement in ‘merica to “save the sanctity of marriage.” Golly, maybe not condoning sex outside of marriage might be a start. Or do you not believe that is something the church should stand for?
(I think the church should also be against the exploitation of midgets, but that’s another story.)
“Fornicators”? That’s so 1611—are you Amish? (It’s a safe bet you’re not, unless you got Apple’s new iChurn—it’s bluetooth and internet ready.)
It’s not just the liars who’re getting punished, but the honest, good-hearted people who want to leave their sins behind and lead a more godly life won’t be able to get married because they weren’t willing to lie are also getting punished, although in an earthly sense.
You have a tough time differentiating between “punishment” and “consequence.” I’ll type this slowly so you can understand:
O U R A C T I O N S C A N H A V E C O N S E Q U E N S E S
By accepting extra curricular ugly bumpin’ we have a consequence for our entire society—religious marriage becomes irrelevant. By refusing to marry those who do they have a consequence, but marriage and the church become stronger.
Can they get married? Sure. They can go to the courthouse and a judge can marry them. You see, that’s consequence. You play hide the weenie you lose the option of a church marriage.
“You have no clue about what the Bible says about judgment.”
Seems like a pretty harsh evaluation of someone you don’t know.
That’s simply a statement of fact: He had no clue what the Bible says about judgment. But if it makes you feel better, you don’t either. You both confuse consequence with punishment.
Sometimes the belt of truth leaves welts.
“Why not investigate it for yourself. This is EXACTLY what we are commanded to do.”
Once more I’ll politely ask for a scripture reference on that one.
You didn’t say “please”…but I’ll answer you anyway.
I Corinthians 5. Whole chapter. Addresses this VERY situation. Tells us not to associate with sexually immoral people. You know, like “fornicators.”
“Just because you want to overlook sin doesn’t make it a good idea.”
Since when did I want to overlook sin? I just said tha I think your system for punishing sin had holes in it.
Here you go with the punishment thing again. Do you have a problem there? A little secret dungeon or something? Hmmm…you may want to discuss it with your pastor. I’m not sure it’s healthy emotionally. But, hey, what two consenting adults and a parrot do in the privacy of their own home is not my business.
Overlooking sin is when you OVERLOOK SIN.

Sin. Bah! Sin rapes you over and over again. I think people should be more concerned with the World and the Law of the World, rather than if whatever you are doing constitutes a sin. Who makes up these sins anyways? When are these sins updated? There has to be some sort of regulatory committee here. The vatican? Bah. I’ll respect the church when:
1) Priests are allowed to marry
2) The vatican accepts homosexuality and accepts that all these happy people, and happy couples aren’t going to hell. They will probably be hanging out in heaven or wherever with you and me.
3) Priests stop molesting little boys….Which has me going on saying..If you and others are so concerned about scriptures and sin and whathaveyou, then why are these priests, the allmighty of allmighty, molesting kids? Since everyone seems to be so passionate about scriptures, where does child molestation fit in in that great holy book?

Do not think about whether the sin is major or minor; think about the One Whom you are disobeying.

dwillsworth,
Sin is a moving target. Almost every Christian thought rejects some aspect of what the Bible calls sin as applying today. With homosexuality there is no question the Bible condemns it. And if I am a homosexual who believes that still applies then in order for me to live according to my faith I would need to abstain from homosexual activity.
But what if I see the Bible’s prohibitions being a product of a certain time and culture (as most Christians do with patriarchal issues.) Then I might dismiss homosexuality as sin and live my Christian faith.

There’s a whole lotta good stuff in this world.. that is sin. Good works.. Benevolent deeds.. religious practices.. liturgical adherences.. just to name a few..
Freaked out?
Let me explain.
Whatever falls short of perfection.. is sin. That goes from the vilest criminal deed, all the way to the most sacrificial and benevolent action. It’s a word that literally means: “miss the mark”.. when the arrow missed the bullseye by a millimeter, it’s called ‘a sin’.
The whole idea of sin.. isn’t so much about bad deeds.. it’s more about our inability to be perfect. Those deeds that are done.. outside of salvation in Jesus.. that are intended in our hearts to gain favor with God… those things are sin.
Sin is the manifestation of our imperfection. Imperfection keeps us from reaching God on our own.. we “fall short”.. (all have sinned and fall short..).. falling short means: “we’re trying to get there on our own”..
It’s a broad word.. encompassing everything from murder to ministry..
Fortunately: Christ is perfect. I am in Him.. He is now, my perfection, and sin is no longer an issue.

I accidently found my way to this blog and was astonished to see what’s going on in here. I am compelled to say to those who venture here, ” This blog/website is brought to you by the spirit of the anti-christ” also know that it is written that satan himself quoted scripture. Dont waste your energy arguing with demons..simply pull down every stronghold and bind them in the name of Jesus. There is no name, no power above the name of Jesus. There is so much good to do. There is no good fruit here and I feel maybe an inkling of what Jesus may have felt when he was hungry and looked for some good fruit on the fig tree and there was none..So I curse this blog/webpage that it wither at the root. For verily I say unto you That whoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he says shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he/she says. Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. Father God I stand forgiving and I stand believing that not by might, not by power but by your SPIRIT, living GOD this mountain be removed. Thank you Father.
